Ok people what is tummeling? It's an old Yiddish word. A tummler was hired to get people to dance at a wedding. It's how u create engagement in networked era post-command/control era. See tummelvision.tv/about-2

I DJ people. That's what Isaid before someone gave me the tummel word. I started involving the "audience" in my shows a long time ago since I was performing for/with so many geeks who were funny themselves. I did a set up for a joke: "Who here has repetitive stress injury?" and someone yelled "We can't raise our hands." I gave them props and thought "What if I didn't write all the jokes? What if this were like the Net?"heather gold • Punt • Delete Comment • Mention heather • +1

@heather gold I complained about the 1400 characters earlier, having to answer a question in six parts due to this restriction...Souris Hong-Porretta • Punt • Delete Comment • Mention Souris • +1

@heather gold Here's the thought pattern, as you know constraints are the key to good product design. Short convo starters make you get to the point. That's what people want in a stream.Brian Norgard • Punt • Delete Comment • Mention Brian • +1

@heather gold @Souris Hong-Porretta 1500 character limits in conversation are designed to keep updates flowing and ideas fresh.Brian Norgard • Punt • Delete Comment • Mention Brian • +1

@Souris Hong-Porretta @heather gold This generation isn't frankly interested in novels. This kids aren't on Namesake just yet because we've tried to keep 'em off as we get things tuned but 1500 characters is like a novel to this demo.Brian Norgard • Punt • Delete Comment • Mention Brian • +1

@heather gold @Souris Hong-Porretta We tested this a lot and 1500 was just about the right amount if you *really* wanted to get an idea out there.Brian Norgard • Punt • Delete Comment • Mention Brian • +1

1. go first, be vulnerable (crap I can't make a list bc return inputs everything) 2. create emotional entry points 3. design 1st for the engagement between people NOT info (Namesake doesn't seem to have done this though it's certainly better than Wave and some other failures..bear in mind almost NO ONE has done this. Flickr still the best we have IMO) this means phatic communication is a priority. BIG FACES, ability to change them, ability to send social signals (though we'll invent some of our own ways). ways to see our inter-rleatedness4. emphasize social flow in the stream for us over info flow. that's what search is for (i personally don't see myself using the Discover section of this site at all) 5. ++++++support and reward tummeling: when people engage and connect people to each other. Right now this site only has that happen through a basic invite or over expertise. eg. I care more that Souris is good peeps, trustworthy, there for me in hard times, funny generally smart than I do that she can tell me who painted what in LA. Most of the webs businesses IGNORE THIS BASIC FACT ABOUT PEOPLE AND IT DRIVES ME BATTY. It means TRUST people will make the connections in your site NOT the data. This is a start Brian. Probably hire tummlers, learn to do it and set the tone and have a public flow where everyone can see it. @DanGould has a good start by greeting people. that's good. Where's his flow? I haven't found it yet. Who will he introduce you to?heather gold • Punt • Delete Comment • Mention heather • +1

@heather gold some really good ideas (though I'll watch the full talk later). We very much want to center everything around people. I'd love to talk specific ideas at some point.Dan Gould • Punt • Delete Comment • Mention Dan • +1
